Obituary

Mrs. Morris was a member of Gregg Temple A.M.E. Church, Rev. Timothy Morrow, pastor. Mrs. Morris was born in Perry, Florida, on March 28, 1926. She was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, in a religious home by loving parents. Mrs. Alma Morris was a resident of Tampa for more than 58 years. She was educated in the Atlanta, Georgia, public school system and attended Morris Brown College. She later completed her education at the University of South Florida. Mrs. Alma Morris was employed for many years at the Hillsborough County Public School System and the Hillsborough County Class Room Teachers Association. Mrs. Morris was a very active member of Tampa's civic and religious communities. She loved her family, her church and her community. Her favorite motto was "love, peace, joy, and happiness, which she shared with so many family, friends, and community members. She also helped create the Greater Mt. Carmel A.M.E. AIDS Center. Mrs. Alma Morris gave much of her love, talents, and time to many civic and religious organizations. They included: The National Council of Negro Women; Methodist Women United; Life-Time member of the Missionary Society at the local, Episcopal and Connectional levels; Member Layman's local, Episcopal and Connectional levels; YPD Director; Tampa Missionary Conference President; A.M.E. Connectional Officer; former Board Member of Edward Waters College; and Representative for the Class Room Teachers Association; Mrs. Alma Morris was crowned an African Mother by the African Mothers of the A.M.E. church and named Sigasigma Gula. Mrs. Alma Morris was preceded in death by her father, Jim Gallon; mother, Allie Gallon; and daughter, Cheryl Morris. She will be missed by many who knew her. Mrs. Alma Morris leaves to cherish her fond memories: loving husband, Johnnie Morris; a son John Edward Morris; two daughters, Devora (Taylor) Solomon, and Alfreda Boman; Grandchildren: Veroniya Winkfield, Yolanda Douse, Jomesha Iles, Deidre Boman and Shamyka Solomon; twelve great grandchildren: Terrencia Iles, Terrence Iles, Termeshia Mincey, Wayman Hunter III, Joterra Iles, Norris Mincey III, S'even Mincey, Myjah Glenn, Termyia Iles, D'Michael Glenn, and Emanuel Brown, Jr.; devoted cousins James Alexander, Odessa Alexander, Bernard Clark, Otha Caldwell, and Ben Alexander and Jean; three special Christian sons, Dr. Melvin Kenneley, Rev. Ricky Polk, and Jesse Burns; special friends Ann Pharis, Eddie Mae Williams, Gomez Payne and Martha Staten.
