Obituary

Homegoing service for Mrs. Alma Somerville Jackson, who passed away on December 31, 2012, will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Greater Mt. Carmel A.M.E Church, 4209 N. 34th Street, with Pastor Charles Cloy, officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born in Warren County, North Carolina in the late 1920's to Solomon and Mary Somerville. She graduate from Hampton University in 1950 and in the same year she married Andrew R. Jackson, who later completed Meharry Medical School. They later moved to Tampa, Florida where they raised their family. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was a lifelong member of Greater Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church. Past civic affiliations include: Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and Links, Incorporated. She enjoyed traveling and entertaining. One of her most memorable trips was seeing the Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier boxing match at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. She was one of Tampa's most fashionable ladies. Alma Jackson leaves to cherish her memory: son, Keith Jackson and wife (Kathy) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Gail Carter and husband (Bruce) of Tampa, and Cheryl Jackson of King George, Virginia; grandchildren, Keith Christopher Jackson, Charmaine Jackson, Carleton Carter, and Karen Carter. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at Aikens Funeral Home, 2708 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday for the service.
