A Homegoing Celebration for Deacon Andrew L James, Sr. of Tampa who passed away Monday, March 19, 2012 will be held Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 29th Street, Rev. Dr. Evan Burrows, pastor and officiant. Interment will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Deacon James was born November 9, 1934 in Sanford, Florida and attended the public schools of Hillsborougjh County, graduating from Middleton High School in 1954. He attended FAMU & was a U.S Army Veteran. He married his high school sweetheart in 1957 after 6 years of courtship. He was Deacon at First Baptist Church of College Hill, Rev. Dr. Evan Burrows, pastor. Andrew was an avid basketball player. His passion was visiting and praying with the sick and shut-ins in their homes, hospitals and nursing homes. He also loved scouting and was selected as the first Scout Master at Potter Elementary School. Andrew trained and mentored many youths of the area, including coaching and managing some of Belmont Heights Little League teams for years. He was amember of Jim Wilson Lodge # 121 of the International Masons; the Legends (retired sports figures). He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew (Two-Man) James, Jr., mother and stepfather Edward and Sarah Johnson and brother, Ronnie Johnson. He leaves to cherish loving memories his best friend and wife of 54 years, Jacquelyn Butler James; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daryl James, Hampton, Virginia, Marlon (Alison) James, New Port News,VA, and Elaine James, Tampa, FL; 6 grandchildren, Mahogany James, Tampa, Andre' James, Tampa, LeTanya James, Fayetville, N.C; Marlon James, Monique James, Newport News, VA, and Dominique James, Petersburg, VA, 9 greatgrandchildren, Aleysia, Aryana, Amir, Aveaya and Kyleim James, New Port News, VA, Tyval, Kenya, Madison Bryant, Fayettville, NC, and Malachi James, Petersburg; VA; sister, Patricia Johnson, Tampa; brother, Edward Johnson, Jr., Tampa; nephews and nieces, Edward Johnson III, Laketha Abdullah, Roger Carter, Donald Napier, Tammy Napier, Jasmine Napier, Misty Napier, Carla Holden, Patricia Johnson, Jetavia Gaynor, Maya Montgomery, and Carlos Reynolds, Jr., cousins, Frank (Marilyn) Floyd family, Freddie Diggs family, Sheila Thomas, Beatrice Filer and a host of other cousins and relatives; extended family: aunt, Ethel Gambrell; sister-in-law, G. The viewing will be held at First Baptist Church of College Hill on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 5 to 8 pm. The family will receive guests from 7 to 8 pm. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
