Obituary

Dr. Arlessa Simpson Kubon of Tampa, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the Austin House Senior Living Facility in Lutz, Florida. Born on July 16, 1940, in Washington, D.C., she was the beloved daughter of the late James and Beatrice Simpson. A proud graduate of Western High School in Washington, D.C., Dr. Kubon enlisted in the United States Air Force upon graduation and was stationed in Seattle, Washington. After serving her country, she went on to dedicate her life to education. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of the District of Columbia (formerly D.C. Teachers College), a Master's in Education from The George Washington University, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Delaware. Over her distinguished career as an educator, Dr. Kubon  inspired generations of students, colleagues, and community members with her passion for learning, teaching, and service. Dr. Kubon was a devoted and active member of her community. Her commitment extended far beyond the classroom, as she tirelessly volunteered her time and expertise to numerous organizations, including the NAACP, Civitans of Tampa, WEDU Public Television, children's reading groups, and the Hillsborough County Library. She also proudly served on several Hillsborough County community boards, working to strengthen educational opportunities and civic engagement throughout the Tampa Bay area. In addition to her professional and civic accomplishments, Dr. Kubon was an avid world traveler who embraced the richness of diverse cultures and experiences. Her adventurous spirit, intellectual curiosity, and deep love for people were defining hallmarks of her life's journey.

She is survived by her loving family: her sister, Vivian Card, her son, Leslie J. Roberts II, and his wife, Andrea Roberts; her daughter, Stephanie Roberts, and her husband, David Cheal; her grandchildren, Branden Roberts, and his wife Christina Roberts, Nathaniel Roberts, and Desmond Roberts; and her greatgrandchild, Hana R. Roberts, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins from her hometown of Washington D.C. Her many dear and loving friends from all over the world, will mourn her passing, as well. Dr. Kubon—affectionately known as 'Dr. K'—will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her grace, generosity, and unwavering dedication to others. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hillsborough County Public Schools Teachers Supplies fund in memory of Dr. Arlessa S. Kubon, continuing her lifelong mission of supporting education and empowering teachers.
