Arthur
Mccarr
March 11, 1939 – August 21, 2021
Arthur who was affectionately called, "Moochie" by his family and friends was born March 11, 1939, to the late Arthur E. McCarr Sr., and Ethel McCarr. He was a native of Tampa, Florida and a graduate of Middleton Senior High School, class of 1956. After high school, he continued his education at Florida A & M University. He was a member of the Florida A & M "Marching 100" where he played the clarinet. His college roommate was brass section leader, the late Dr. Charles "Prof" Bing, Sr. It was at Florida A&M where he met his bride, Mattie "Tot" Barnes. Once, Arthur entered the workforce, he was employed by Reynolds Aluminum, Terminal Transport, and Unijack.
He retired after employment at Sligh Middle School. Arthur was well-known in Tampa and throughout the country for his legendary skills as a Pool Checkers Champion. A skill and art he learned from his late father, Arthur McCarr, Sr. After developing his love for checkers, Arthur competed in and won several national tournaments. He won competitions from the Junior to the Master level. Every second Saturday in March, for many years Arthur would celebrate his birthday by hosting a "Pool Checkers" gala where Pool Checkers players from near and far would gather to have fun and play against each other. This event also fostered camaraderie among the players. Arthur gave back to the community by teaching Pool Checkers to young people at the Hope Community Center, where he held tournament events. He also held a tournament at his church, First Baptist Church of College Hill. Arthur credited the Andrews brother, (the late C. Blythe and Dr. W.W.) for encouraging him in his checker game. They made it possible for him and other men to play checkers on 29th street.
Arthur was also chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador for American Pool Checkers Organization. He was recognized for his efforts in organizing the players in Tampa, and the surrounding area. Arthur enjoyed bowling and joined several bowling leagues. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He leaves to cherish his memories: son, Sheldon McCarr; grandchildren, Kesha McCarr, Tiffany McCarr-Watson (Kevin), Keith McCarr and Jahla McCarr; great grandchildren, Kaleb Robinson, Kamaya Wilson, Kevin Watson Jr., Elijah McCarr, Kason Watson, Trinity McCarr, Karson McCarr, Kaelynn Watson; sister, Roberta James (Bill) Boston, MA; special friends, Dr. Leonard Campbell, Rev.
