Audrey Veronica Walker was born, the second of three children to the late Rennie R. and Sydonie V. Walker on Christmas Day 1967, in the city of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Beginning her earliest days, Audrey exhibited a profound introspection that would continue to shape her path into adulthood. Her childhood was overshadowed by a deep shyness and tendency to keep others at a distance. She faced ongoing challenges with her self-esteem and confidence, but found joy in lifes simpler pleasures. Often found beneath a hard and seemingly abrasive exterior, Audreys heart was always open and ready to offer kindness to others. She lived her life unapologetically, with her old soul esthetic and really didnt care what anyone thought. She was a fiercely independent, hardworking, caring individual with a passion for travel, reading, 1970s sitcoms, theater, Food Network, HGTV and yes, it has to be mentioned, the occasional flutter with the lottery and clandestine trip, to the Hard Rock Casino, Seminole! She began again to love spending time with family members; she enjoyed good food and most especially, the huge choices on offer at family celebrations, which she could often be heard to describe as being, "very delicious!" Audrey received her primary and secondary education at Heathfield Junior Infant school, Handsworth and Broadway Secondary school, in Perry Barr, Birmingham, UK. Her professional journey took her from Birmingham to New York and later to Tampa, Florida, wherein she held a variety of job roles.
Having relocated to New York in 1989 and driven by her passion for early childhood education, Audrey began her career babysitting, followed by a much loved teaching assistant position at the Co-op City Childrens Center. In 1994, Audrey moved to Tampa to join her family after a much treasured aunt, was relocated due to a progressing illness. She worked for a time at McNatts dry cleaners; then as a teaching assistant at a local pre-school and in 1996, she accepted a full-time unit-secretary position at Moffitt Cancer Center, transferring in 2021 to a remote working position, which she would later describe as her "best job ever!"
A longstanding medical history of back and knee pain increased severely throughout 2021, to a point where she could no longer stand or walk. Hospitalization and medical investigations resulted in the devastating diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer on December 12th. Its no secret Audrey lived her life outside of the family for many, many, years and many reasons, but thankfully she reached out in February of 2022. With the love and support she had so long denied herself, she underwent various treatments, to include radiotherapy and hormone based chemotherapy, in a valiant battle against this disease, until her death on Wednesday 10 th April 2024.
She was preceded in death by our beloved parents.
Audrey leaves behind to treasure her memory: her siblings, Andrea Wisdom; Martin Walker, aunts: Pauline McIntosh; Marvine Thompson, uncle: Lancelot McIntosh, special-mention cousins: Davinia Duncan, Sharon Baker, Dawn Griffith (nee Daniels), Pamela and Paulette Haughton; her niece, nephews, great nephews, and numerous other relatives and dear friends.
