Homegoing services for Mr. Bennie Bowers, Jr., of Tampa who passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 after a brief illness, will be held Saturday, June 13th, 10:00 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, 5001 Cumberland Drive, Reverend Beverly Lane, pastor officiating. The internment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Bennie Bowers, Jr. was born on February 16, 1921 in Tampa, Florida to Bennie Bowers, Sr. and Narcissus Bowers. Bennie was raised in Tampa, Florida and attended the public schools of Hillsborough County and graduated from Don Thompson Vocational School in 1939. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942, where he served with honor and distinction during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Armed Forces in 1945, where he received many awards and accolades. Upon his release, he attended Florida A&M University and studied business. He moved to Detroit, Michigan and later to New York City, where he became an expert tailor. He moved to Stamford, Connecticut where he was employed with Raytheon Corporation for 35 years as a plant manager. He retired in 1993 and moved back to Tampa, Florida. Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Black Bowers; brother, Horace Bowers; sister, Dorothy Rahmings; and grandson, Torrey Bowers. He leaves to cherish his memories: 1 daughter, Twanda Bowers of Stamford, CT.; 1 son, Tyrone Bowers (Susan) of Brandon, FL; 1 sister, Comina Hills of Tampa, FL; a host of grandchildren, great grand-children, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces and cousins among whom are Rev. Beverly Lane and Cherry Green both of Tampa; Par and Bogey Golf Club; and special friends, Ruth Robinson, Rufus Lewis and Brenda Anderson. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, June 12th, from 5-8pm. The family will receive friends from 7-8pm. The friends and family are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
