Bonnita attended Hillsborough County Public Schools, graduating from Hillsborough Senior High School in 1974. She later worked for the City of Tampa, then moved to the Hillsborough County School Board, where she worked for more than 20 years. Lastly, she worked at Oak Park Elementary, where she was appreciated and loved by all the staff and students. Bonnita attended St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, led by Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, Sr.

Bonnita was preceded in death by her grandmother, Estelle Cornell; sister, Cynthia Jones-McGill; brothers, Terrance "Wayne" Melton and Alvin Melton; and nieces Ebony, LaQwanda, and Tammy.

Bonnita leaves to cherish her greatest memories of life to her mother, Theresa Melton to whom she was dedicated to. Her sisters, Estella Melton (Kelvin) and Sharon Melton; nephews, Kevin Frazier, Keith Jones, Kareem McGill, and Sysqo Williams; nieces, Kortina Jones, Devin Taylor-Young (Ken), Ericka Lewis, Zsa Zsa Grace, and Kelexia Thompson; a host of grand nephews and nieces, stepchildren and godchildren; as well as special childhood friends Patricia, Meechi, Lucille, Paulette, and Sheria from Atlanta; Gwen from Maryland and her godmother Ms. Martha. Special appreciation to our family members traveling from Tallahassee, Orlando, and Georgia.
