Cal was born on October 25, 1939, in Hawthorne, FL to Lula and Cal Gillins, Sr. His hobbies were watching old westerns, fishing, and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores Gillins; daughters, Kathryn Washington, and Cynthia Bradley; son, Leavie Joe Bradley; brothers, Elmore Bennette, Jessie Gillins, Sr., Willie Gillins, Sr., and Jake "Jay" Gillins; sisters, Mattie Lee Gordon, Anna Williams, Annie Robinson, Clara Williams, Eva Mae Rhodes, and Mary Williams.

He leaves to mourn: his children, John Daway (Felicia), Carolyn Williams, Gloria Jean Bethel, Tracy Rolle, and Armando "Chanel" Daway; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Elnora Robinson, Anna Marie Castor of Wyandanch, NY, and Julia Mae Castor of Hawthorne, FL; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
