Homegoing Celebration for Ms. Carolyn Birt Monroe of Tampa who passed away, Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Tampa General Hospital, will be held Saturday, November 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 2504 E. Chipco St., Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, pastor with Elder Frank O. Gray Sr., officiating. The interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Carolyn Monroe was born April 11, 1938 in Tampa, Florida to the late Elliott Birt, Sr. and the late Daisy Thomas. Carolyn was a native of Tampa, Florida. She attended local public schools and graduated from Middleton Senior High School in 1956. She furthered her academic pursuits at Florida A&M University, where she graduated in 1972 with a degree in Education. Because of her love for education, she held various jobs in this field, which included: teaching night school at Middleton Senior High School and teaching in the summer for the College Kids at Hillsborough Community College program. Before retiring, she was employed as a history teacher and cheerleader coach at Jefferson Senior High School for over 30 years. Carolyn was a member of the Beta Sigma Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Eastern Star Organization. Carolyn was predeceased by her loving son, Ike Williams Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving grandson, Corey Williams and wife Kimberly of Atlanta, Georgia; her great- grandchildren, Kourtney and Cody Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; her daughter-in-law, Kelly Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister, Barbara J. Birt of Tampa Florida; her brothers, Elliott Birt Jr. and wife Velma of Hartford, Connecticut; Otis Birt Sr. of Tampa, Florida; her aunts, Margaret Cannedy of Tampa, Florida: Ruth Collins Martin of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm with the family will receiving visitors from 5pm to 6pm. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
