Darryl was the first child born to Fred and Barbara Hills. His father, Mr. Fred Hills, preceded him in death. Darryls education was in Tampa, Florida and he graduated from Hillsborough High School, class of 1983. After high school, he attended North Carolina AT&T State University and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1997.

He continued his education at Radford University in Radford, VA where he obtained his Master of Science Degree in 2000. Darryl was a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity member of the Daytona Beach Alumni Chapter in 2002. He was a faithful Mount Zion Baptist Church member in Greensboro, NC. He was an active member of the Biblical Counseling Ministry prior to his declining health. He also spent time with the Mens Breakfast with Bishop Brooks. On December 30, 2006, he and Sylvia A. Henry, the love of his life, were married. Darryl loved to educate and guide the youth and young adults. He believed education was the key for our people.

He was able to fulfill his passion of his career through the position of Compliance Director and Assistant Athletic Director positions in the athletic departments at universities and colleges. He helped young people to focus at Bethune-Cookman University when he worked as the Compliance Director and Assistant Athletic Director. He continued to inspire the youth and young adults in the same position at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 2008 when he relocated to Greensboro, NC. After eight years at AT&T Darryl moved to Jackson, Mississippi to fill the position of Director of Compliance at Jackson State University. Because of illness, the time spent at Jackson State University was shortened. Darryl helped to change the lives of young people wherever he went.

Sweet memories remain with his wife, Sylvia; son, Lance; mother, Barbara Hills; brother, Marlon (Angela) Hills; niece, Jasmine; nephew, Marlon Hills Jr.; aunt, Carol Ash; uncles, Claudine Hills (VA Beach) Dr. James O (Sandra) Brookins, Donald Brookins, Dwight (Cherika) Brookins; great aunt Gwendolyn Lindo. Also surviving him like a mother, Virginia (John) Anderson, and Charlene (Donald) Fox; like a brother, Gig (Monique) Brown; extended family, Gambrell, (Pyles) Witsell special friends who will miss Darryl include, Fred (Lilly) Johnson, Dexter Moore, Marvin and Chris Hall, and Derrick Johnson as well as numerous cousins, friends, and other relatives.
