Dexter was born on December 7, 1973, to the late Griffin Myles, Jr. and Valerie Desseau–Buchanan. He grew up with a passion for learning and community, attending C. Leon King High School, before continuing his education at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas. While at Paul Quinn, he became a proud Spring 1993 initiate of the Iota Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., an organization that reflected his commitment to leadership and brotherhood. He loved and cherished his "A Phi A".

He leaves to cherish his memories to: daughters, Daisha, Jakayla, Dextiny, and Jakyra Myles, Johnise Hicks, and Aniiya Livingston; grandkids, Layani, Sophia Butler, Dashawn Myles, and Sekani Strong; mother, Valerie Buchanan; father, Gregory Buchanan (Deborah); siblings, Elijah Moore, Ricardo Hightower (Michelle), Griffin Myles III, Titania Buchanan, and Felicia Porter; aunts and uncles, Felder Desseau, Darryl Myles, Leslie Buchanan (Hestand), Michael McCalla (Kim), Sydney McCalla (Elaine), Leeroy McCalla (Rose), Hazel Brown, Tiffany,  Marion Gyden (Walter), Mary, Audrey, and Janice Myles; special friends,  Cedric Christopher, Tyrone Jones, Kenneth Sampson, Kendra (Tutti) Armstrong, and Jackie Chapman; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and other close friends.
