Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Dolores Mazon Hill of Valrico, who passed away Friday, November 8, 2013 at Sun City Hospice House, will be held, Saturday, November 16th at 2:00 p.m. at Aikens Funeral Home Chapel, 2708 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Rev. Dr. Mozella Mitchell, pastor of Love of Christ Church, officiating. Interment will follow. Mrs. Dolores Mazon Hill was born October 17, 1926 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late William, Sr. and Esther Caldwell. After high school she became one of the first music majors to graduate from Bethune Cookman College, where her friendship and guidance from civil right activist Mary McCloud Bethune, gave her connections in the music and political fields. Mrs. Hill continued her education at the Lawson School of Music in New York, George Washington University in Washington, DC and received a master's degree from Columbia University. Mrs. Hill later married and had a son Horace A Hill, Jr. She performed around the state and came to know many renowned performers including singers, Roland Hayes and Marion Anderson. In the early 1950's, she began teaching at Union Academy high school in Bartow, Florida. Aunt "D" as she was affectionately known worked for more than four decades of guiding children in song. Her career culminated at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, where she worked for 14 years. Mrs. Hill watched children grow and their lives change. Her classes included children of every skin color and nationality, and her music lessons included multicultural studies. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Horace Hill, Jr. and aunt, Rebecca "Nana" Kendall. She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories with her brother, William Caldwell, Jr. and the Caldwell family of Tampa, Carolyn Plummer Riley who was like a daughter and lovingly cared for her with Angel N. Smith; granddaughters, Rasheedah "Nichole" Chaptman (Leroy), Michelle Williams and Tracey Hill; great granddaughter, Jesenia; 1 great grandson; a host of relatives, East St. Louis family, Larry family, Plummer family, Nunn family, King family, Roseanne and Luis Humphrey, Newbern, SC, Catherine Quarles, Augustus Wimberly, Andri Thompson, Barbara Barrington, Claire Brown, Theresa Manuel, Theora Lester, Raynell Goodman, Joyce Gibson, Indianapolis, Indiana, Margaret Woodie, Atty. Kaydell Wright-Douglas, Olivia Carmichael-Brown, The Osborne Ave Family and a host of other colleagues and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, November 15th from 5 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the chapel on Saturday for the service.
