Donald Gene
Durden
October 14, 1952 – June 9, 2025
Today, we gather to honor the life of a man whose strength, spirit, and service left a deep and lasting mark on the world around him- Donald Durden. He was born to the late Theodore and Florence Durden, whose values and love helped shape the foundation of his life. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Donald was a true son of the city. A proud graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High School Class of 1970- home of the Mighty Bulls- he carried the lessons of his youth to every arena of his life. He was a husband, a father, a brother, an athlete, a friend, a mentor, a first responder, a service member- he was a person who excelled in living life. The drive, discipline, and determination he displayed during his life weren't just physical; it was mental," 95% mental" as he would say. Donald served with honor as a U.S. Army veteran and later devoted 30 years to Dade County as a firefighter and first responder. These 30 years included the worn phrase that he would tell everyone who would listen: "25 years of uninterrupted service". This was what was required for full retirement from the fire department. For three decades, he ran toward the flames, toward the danger, and the need of others. He retired from the fire department, but that kind of courage doesn't retire- it was reflected in the way he lived and raised his family. He was also an active and passionate member of the Progressive Firefighters Association, where he helped pave the way for future generations through mentorship, advocacy, and leadership. His impact continues through the lives and careers of those he guided and supported. To his beloved wife Evelyn, he was a partner in every sense.
To his children- Misha, Michael, and Erica- he was a steadfast guide, always reminding them how to treat people, do the right things, take care of themselves, respect others, and make sure others knew disrespect was not going to be tolerated here. His words had weight, not just because of their wisdom, but because he lived them. He was the last surviving sibling to Theola, Durwood, Doris, Juanita, and Charles- a bond that stretched across the years with love, laughter, and loyalty. And to the young athletes at Scott Lake Track Club and Miami Norland Senior High School, Coach Durden was more than a coach- he was a leader, a mentor, and a believer in their potential. Not just as athletes, but more specifically, their potential as people, as men and women who could impact their own families and communities. Donald Durden was a man of action, faith, and undeniable presence. His legacy lives not only in what he accomplished but in whom he inspired: his family, his athletes, his brothers and sisters in service, and every life touched by his steady presence and fierce heart. He leaves behind a legacy carried forward not only by his children but also by his beloved granddaughters, Kiara and Camille, who brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly. Rest easy, Hero. Your work here is done.
