She was the second of three siblings born to the late Henrietta and John Allison. Her initial walk with Christ began at Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa. Doris later joined Christ United Methodist Church, where she remained a faithful member until Christ called her home on July 21, 2010. Doris was married to the late Robert A. Thomas and to this union, three children were born, Bobby, Cheryl and Sharman. After completing her formal education in the schools of Hillsborough County, Doris attended Florida A&M College where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. In December 1945, she was initiated into the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., at Florida A&M. Doris held the distinction of being crowned Miss FAMCEE in 1945-46. Her teaching career began at Harlem Elementary School and subsequently included Meacham, Jackson Heights and Gorrie. During her career Doris received the "Award of Honor for Outstanding First Grade Teacher" and "Certificate of Award for Outstanding Professional Service". Doris loved her students and her students loved her. Because of her outstanding teaching skills, many parents requested placement of their children in her class. After having touched the lives of hundreds of children, Doris retired in 1980 with 32 years of dedicated service. Her interests extended to serving on the Board of Directors of Tampa Day Nursery, and the Board of Directors of the Saturday's Children Program, where she was a volunteer Master Reading Teacher. . She held membership in the National Retired Teacher's Association and the NAACP. Other activities included the March of Dimes and East Tampa Civic Association. Known as a melodious soprano, Doris rendered her talents to both the community and her church. She was a member of the Meachamaires Choral Group. As an Alpha Kappa Alpha Golden Soror with over 50 years of dedicated service, she worked on numerous committees. Doris chaired and co-chaired her hostess group, the Miss Teenage Tampa Public Relations Committee, and the Housing Management Committee of the AKA House. She was honored as Soror of the Month and recognized for her outstanding financial support. Although Doris experienced declining health which prevented her from attending meetings and events, her heart remained faithful to her sisterhood. With "Doris A.
