Dorothy "Miss
Kitty" Daniels
October 5, 1934 – January 2, 2025
Ms. Kitty Daniels was born to Viola McKinnon and J.W.Alexander on October 5, 1934 in Tampa, FL. at home on 8th Ave. in Ybor City. She was an amazing jazz musician whose music brought joy to everyone she played for. An incomparable singer and pianist, she nurtured three generations of children through her love of music. Ms. Kitty was a pillar of her community and an activist. Her talent and compassion made her one of the greatest people we have ever known and a true Tampa icon. For a time , she could be seen nightly at Donatello's, one of Tampa's finest restaurants, entertaining patrons and inspiring them to be their best selves. A few years ago, the City of Tampa honored her with her own holiday, August 27, in recognition of her work as a black activist to ensure that other black musicians and artists could join the Musicians' Union.
Ms. Kitty was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Charlie "Oodie" Daniels; sons, Charment E. "Gizzy" Buard and Mark Winston; father, JW Alexander; mother, Viola McKinnon; sister, Helen Grimes; uncle, Fred Rawles; and niece, Elestria Grimes.
She was a beloved matriarch of her family and is survived by her longtime partner and love of 40 years, Majid Shabazz; children, Perry "Keith" Austin, Polete Buard IV (Kathy), Charlie Daniels III, and Linda "Tammy" Daniels; grandchildren, Kevin Gibson, RaiLynda "RV" Jenkins, Michael C Reed (JC), and Ruben J. Jenkins II (Teyonnah); great-grandchildren, Ja'Ziyah Gibson, Kevin Gibson, Jr., Rah'kim J. Jenkins, Alexander W. Reed, Te'yonni S. Jenkins, and Romero J. Jenkins; nephew, Cloris Grimes, and his wife; grandniece, Monique Norris (Richard), cousin, Tirrinny Grimes; godchildren, Dale Horton, Greta Lumpkin (Robert), and Denitra Renaye Britt; special friends, Ron Kert, Gail Tucker, Belinda Womack, Gino Tiozzo, Louis Krikorian, and Scott Turner (Tracy).
