On a warm, foggy Sunday night, Ersie Evette Silas was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Mitchell and Catherine Silas. Ersie was educated in the segregated public school system of Lynchburg. She excelled in school and was named to the National Honor Society. After high school, Ersie attended Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, where she graduated with honors. While at Hampton, Ersie met and fell in love with Clayton Maurice Martin of Boston, Massachusetts. They were married on August 3, 1968. From their loving union was born one son, David Clayton Martin, who was adored by both of his parents. In 1978, Ersie and Clayton made a bold career choice, moving their family to Saudi Arabia. Clayton worked for Fayez Construction Firm, and Ersie taught second grade at Parents Cooperative School System. After six years, the family returned to the United States so that Ersie and Clayton could pursue master’s degrees and David could develop stronger family connections. Teaching was more than a career for Ersie; it was a true source of joy. She had a special love for educating elementary school students and took great pride in helping young minds learn, grow, and discover their potential. Throughout her career as an educator, she brought warmth, patience, and dedication to the classroom, leaving a lasting impression on the many children she had the privilege of teaching. In her later years, Ersie found her greatest joy in spending time with family, especially her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished the moments they shared and expressed her love in many ways, including through her cooking. Family and friends looked forward to the delicious meals and desserts she lovingly prepared, creating memories around the table that will remain with them for years to come. Ersie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clayton Maurice Martin, and her greatgranddaughter, Tiannah’Marie King. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, David and Erin Martin; grandchildren, Darryl A. King, Jr., Evan and Kynesha King, and Miriam and Frank Daniels Sr.; greatgrandchildren, Arielle King, Evan King II, Israel King, and Frank Daniels Jr.; her Boston family; sister-in-law, Lynnell Morris; niece, Janiene Morris; nephews, Christian and Khalil Morris; special cousin, Jaquie Easterling; godson, Kendall Clark; beloved extended family, Elder James and Karen Jeffries; cherished friends, Rebecca Shine and William Tinsley; and a host of other family members and friends.
