Obituary

Homegoing celebration for Mrs. Ethel Lee Mayer who passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015 will be held Monday, March 9, 2014, 7:00 p.m., Heritage Christian Community Baptist Church, 14801 N 15th Street, Lutz, FL 33549.Pastor Delores Cain, officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Ethel Lee James was born on February 8, 1926 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to the late Joseph and Annie James. Sister Ethel confessed Christ at an early age. She had a brother and sister that preceded her in death. Sister Ethel attended the public schools of Bennettsville, South Carolina. She later moved to New York and met her husband, Douglas Mayers. They were married December 16, 1950 and remained so until the Lord called her home. She was employed by the Greyhound Bus Corporation until her retirement. The Mayers relocated to Tampa, Florida in 1988 and joined Mount Olive A.M.E Church. She served as an usher and a member of the culinary ministry for 23 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Sister Mayers was an activist for her community. She was instrumental in getting Hartline extended further north into the North Lake area. Most recently, Sister Mayers became a faithful member of Heritage Christian Community Baptist Church. Sister Mayers was a very witty, friendly, caring and outgoing woman who loved helping others. She loved to praise and worship our Lord and Savior and had a great personal relationship with Him. She was a mother / grandmother figure to many and will be greatly missed. The Lord called his faithful servant home on March 3, 2015. She leaves to cherish her memories: A loving husband, Douglas Mayers, nieces and nephews; Mary Easterling, Mildred (James) Hodges, Anna (Austin) Connor, Sandra (Jasper) Jones, Vickie Jones, Willie Oxendine, Willie Joyce Sharpe, Furman Oxendine, Antoninette Amin, Gwendolyn Felecia Weathers, Thomas (Geraldyne) James, Cecilia Martin, Gail A. James, extended family, H.C.C.B.C family and a host of relatives and friends. The visitation will be held Monday, March 9th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Christian Community Baptist Church. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Monday for the service.
