Obituary

Homegoing services for Mr. Excel Hollowings formerly of Tampa, who passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011, will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Aikens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Anthony White, officiating. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery. Excel was born January 1, 1957 in Swainsboro, Georgia to the parents of Wesley and Ella Hollowings. He was the middle son of three. He grew up and developed a love for fine art and music. He especially enjoyed reggae music and black history. Excel could draw exceptionally well and enjoyed playing his harmonica and drums. Excel enjoyed reading his bible and attended Bible study class. Excel had a way of making others laugh. He followed his sports and was a big Oakland Raider and New York, Yankee's fan. Excel was fun loving, easy going, free spirited, caring, and talented are among the words that characterized him. During his 26 year career with the U.S. Postal Service, Excel touched the lives of many he worked with and served, receiving many acknowledgments of his kindness over the years. He resided in Atlanta most of his adult life, but was a native of Tampa, where he attended the public school system and graduated from Chamberlain High School. Following High School, Excel enlisted in the U.S. National Guard and later the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He served nine years as an infantryman and received an Honorable Discharge, and many accommodations. Excel was married at one time to Sybil and enjoyed parenting his step-daughters. He leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Wesley and Ella Hollowings; 2 brothers, Farris Coleman and Anthony Hollowings; 1 sister-in-law, Patricia Coleman; bestfriend, Damon Mackey; 2 uncles, John and Ledell; 4 aunts, Dorothy, Gladys, Joyce and Zenovia; great uncle, John; great aunt, Essie; nieces, nephews and cousins, Eric, Patrick, Orisa, Nikki, Byron, Thomas, Sherman and Felecia; special friends, the Cason family and the 34th street community; and a host of other relatives and friends in Tampa and Atlanta. The friends are asked to meet at the chapel on Friday for the service. There will be no viewing.
