Freddie Lee Mathis, affectionately known as "Big Boy," was born on February 17, 1958, in Orlando, FL, to Namon Mathis and Elouise Fortson. Big Boy was a man of many passions and talents. He enjoyed playing the saxophone, which was a gift he cherished throughout his life. As a trained saxophonist and a proud member of the FAMU Marching 100 Band, Freddie's love for music was an integral part of who he was. His musical talent brought joy to countless people, and his talent will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Freddie was a tech enthusiast, skilled in computer technology and graphic design. His curiosity about the world led him to become a lifelong research junkie, always learning and exploring new ideas.
He was a proud graduate of Jones High School and went on to pursue higher education at Florida A&M University, Valencia Community College, and the Art Institute of Tampa. He dedicated himself to his studies, always striving for excellence. As a U.S. Army Veteran, Freddie served his country with honor and pride. His service was a testament to his commitment to others and his sense of duty. Above all, Freddie was a devoted God enthusiast. His faith provided him with strength, peace, and guidance. He lived his life with compassion, kindness, and a deep sense of gratitude.
Freddie was preceded in death by his father, Namon Mathis; mother, Elouise Fortson; brother, Eddie Mathis; and sister, Willie Mae Flennoy. He leaves cherished memories to his loving and devoted wife, Pauline Mathis; children, Fredrick Mathis, Travis Mathis, Whitney Ross (James), Chelsi Mathis, Ahmad Mathis, and Charles Christopher Mathis; grandchildren, Serayah Mathis, Travis Mathis Jr., Trenton Mathis, Lilly Mathis, Autumn Mathis, Ava Mathis, Ne'miah Mathis, Cherish Mathis, Younique Mathis, Jayden Mathis, Haiden Imani, and Destiny Van De Cruize; sisters, Bernice Mathis, and Lucy Graham (Zach); uncle, Peter Ward; brother-in-law, Garth Bailey; nieces, include Jwana Cameron, Asya Evans, Annie Mathis, Reva Flennoy, Tara Maxam, Chelsi Bangura, Gianna Bailey, and Jody Levy; nephews, Earl Nelson, Allen Graham, Antonio Foster, Leroy Foster, David Mathis, Lewis Flennoy, and Ryan Bailey; as well as a multitude of loving cousins.
