Obituary

Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Gary Fred Powe, also known as "Stretch", "Coach" and "Pop" of Brandon, FL departed this earthly life Tuesday, October 27, 2015, service will be Saturday, November 7th, 2:00 p.m. at The Rock Church of God by Faith, 4323 E. Henry Ave, Tampa, Fl., Elder James E. Williams, Pastor with Rev. Keith Boomer, Assoc. Pastor, of Small's Chapel Christian Church, Arapahoe, NC, Eulogist. The interment will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida Monday November 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Gary was born November 28, 1953 in Harlem, New York and grew up in Queens, New York. He attended Springfield Garden High School, Springfield Garden, New York and also attended Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, New York. He served in the United States Air Force as a Morale Welfare Recreation Specialist, and served in Operation Desert Storm (Gulf War). During his enlistment, he played basketball for the USAF team. Gary was a fitness trainer for the military and the Miss Galaxy Competition. He received an honorable discharge concluding his military service. His hobbies were billiards, watching and coaching sports, motorcycles, along with attending car and monster trucks shows. Gary joined Springfield Garden United Methodist Church at an early age and accepted Christ as his Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Beatrice Powe; siblings, Herbert Lewis and Gayle Chapman. He leaves to cherish his memories with his wife, Carolyn Powe; sons, Gary "Mario" and Sredrick "Sed" Powe; grandchild, Isaia Powe, Bloomingdale, Florida; brother, Robert Faust, Detroit, MI; sister, Denise Chambers, Cheraw, S.C; aunts, Ernestine Powe, Yvonne Powe, Cheraw, S.C and Judy Ford, Farell, PA; uncle, James "Boot" Powe, Cheraw, S.C; mother-in-law, Alice Kinsey, Arapahoe, N.C; brother-in-law, Rex Kinsey (Mary) Tucson, AZ; sisters-in-law, Sandra Chapman (Donnie), Angela Sawyer (Dennis), New Bern, N.C and Valarie Lewis, Queens, NY; aunts-in-law, Love Boomer, Arapahoe, NC; Verna Henderson (John), Apex, NC and Ruth Sutton, New Bern, NC; uncles-in-law, William Sutton, Jr. (Odessa), Greensboro, NC and Caesar Sutton, New Haven, CT; special friend, Bradford Sutton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, November 6th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Friday evening. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
