Hattie Jean Helms was born on September 25, 1941, in Cairo, Georgia, to the late Walter James Butler and the late Leo Harvin Butler. "Mrs. Hattie", as she was affectionately known, was a woman who loved many and "A Mother" to all biological and non-biological. Everyone became her child once she opened her door to you. She was known for her desserts (pound cakes, red velvet, and those oh so scrumptious potato pies.) by many, baking was her favorite activity to do. She loved singing and loved God more than anything! She never turned a hungry person away. Even in employment, she worked in hospitality & learned many things from the professional cooks and bakers she worked with. She'd always come home and bake what "Mr. Johnny", the baker at work showed her how to make. She prided herself on the quality of her cooking and it had better be right or she'd let you know. Her main hobby though, was just giving and showing love to all.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter James Butler; mother Leo Harvin Butler; siblings, Lois Garland, Nettie M. Butler, Sarah J. Gurley and Walter Carroll Butler.

She leaves precious memories with her husband, Edgar Helms; children, Regenia Smith (Michael), Walter T. Butler (Lillian), Kerry Helms, Stephanie Helms, Nakita Helms and Marvin Helms (Sylvia); 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ocie Butler; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and sorrowing friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, August 4th from 4:00-8:00p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at Aikens Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, for the service.
