Obituary

A homegoing celebration for Mrs. Hattie Lee Shorter of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016, will be held on Saturday, June 18th, 11:00 a.m. at New Friendship M.B. Church, 3201 E. Lake Ave., Rev. H.L. Daniels, pastor officiating. The interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Hattie Lee Shorter, was the oldest child born to the union of Mr. Emmitt Mims and Mrs. Hattie Van Webb Banks Robinson (both deceased) in Crawford County, Georgia in the Garden Valley District. She attended the public schools of Macon County. Hattie was united in marriage at the age of 16 in 1945 to the late Mr. Horsly Shorter, Sr. Hattie was a sharecropper which included picking cotton, peas and peaches. Mrs. Shorter moved to Tampa, Florida in 1970 and began working at Singleton Packing Company. She continued her education at Benjamin Franklin Adult School and graduated in 1977. She worked in the hotel industry at Regal 8 Inn and retired from Quality Inn Hotel. She continued her work in housekeeping and childcare. She was a laborer of love. She was a faithful active member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horsly Shorter Sr.; son, TSgt Horsley Shorter, Jr.; son-in-law, James Carson, Sr.; four sisters, Christine Brown, Lothia Mae Ross, Mary Lou Robinson, Curtis Robinson and Arma Ruth Robinson; two brothers, Roosevelt Robinson and Joe Louis Robinson. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: four daughters, Ozie Lee Carson of Fort Myers, Florida, Annie Lee Shorter of Tampa, Florida, Ella Marie Coleman of Tampa, Florida and Trinetta (George) Williams of Riverview, Florida; three sons, Wilbert (Mary) Shorter, David (Ruby) Shorter all of Tampa, Florida and Clarence (Stephanie) Shorter of Alabama; godson, Robert (Doris) Kelly of Tampa, Florida; goddaughter, Sis. Kathy Vance of Ocala, Florida; sisters, Geraldine Robinson, Helen Robinson, Lizzie Walter, Claudia Robinson and Ruby Garrett; brothers, Thomas Jr. (Lucille) Groves, Emmitt (Ruby) Banks and Leonard McKellar; devoted friends, Rose Fernandez, Clemmie Davis,Hortense Lampkins, Patty Braxton, and Olivia Carmichael- Brown; 31 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 34 great-great grandchildren; 8 great-great-great grandchildren; and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends; if we have omitted anyone it was of our grieving minds and not of our hearts. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, June 17th from 5 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
