James Canty,
Jr.
April 3, 1933 – June 6, 2025
Mr. James "Tall Man" Canty, Jr. was born in Santee, South Carolina on April 03, 1933, as the second eldest child to the late James Canty Sr. and Rosa L. Canty. He relocated to Tampa, Florida where he was given the name "Tall Man". While living in Tampa, he spent a significant amount of years as a Longshoreman at the loading docks. He retired and remained a member at the longshoreman local #1402 Union. James Canty and Vera Stokes have been together in matrimony since January 3, 2006. They both enjoyed their life together as a couple, of the many things they shared; taking cruises with friends or alone as a couple were amongst their favorite activities. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors since he was young. The joy of fishing and hunting. He lived a very active life, playing and watching sports, and his love of bowling. James was a dedicated member of the Pin Chasers Midtown Bowling league since 1975, earning numerous trophies while enjoying the game he loved. He enjoyed cooking delicious meals for his family and friends.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Canty Sr. and mother, Rosa L. Canty; siblings, Rebecca C. Stephens, Veronica C. Dubose and Virgie L. Canty.
He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Vera S. Canty; 3 sons, Roderick Canty, Ira Ashley (Alena) of Tampa, FL, and Larry Mack of North Carolina; 2 grandchildren, Damien Ashley and So'lori Ashley of Tampa, FL; siblings, Sarah M. Canty, Isaac Canty (Ada) of South Carolina, Eddie Canty (Lula) all of Tampa, Bertha Gaillard (Charles) and Santee of South Carolina; 23 nieces and nephews along with a host of cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; loyal friends, Mr. and Mrs. James Freeman, Jerry Finnley, Rudine Harrell and family, as well as all the Longshoreman Local 1402 Union. "'Tall Man'", while we mourn your loss, you will forever be in our hearts. You will be greatly missed by many as we all cherish the beautiful memories we've shared with you. Thank you for being you, we love you."
