James was born on May 9, 1951, in Tampa, Florida, to James Mitchell, Sr., and Lottie Kate Lane. His favorite activity was riding motorcycles and vacationing in Daytona for Bike Week. James graduated from Middleton High School, the Class of 1969. In 1974, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He worked at the James A. Haley VA Hospital for 40 years and retired in 2017.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Mitchell, Sr.; brother, Charley and Robert Lee Mitchell; stepfather, Bernard Lane; grandfather, George Evans, Sr.; grandmother, Mary Lena Evans.

He leaves precious memories with his beloved wife, Sonia Mitchell; daughter, Jasmine Mitchell; stepchildren, Michael and Mikhila Lovett; grandchildren, Myrick Dula, Myrquel Dula, and Dontay Walton; great-grandchildren, Bernard Dula and Josiah Walton; mother, Lottie Kate Lane; brother, Joe Angelo Mitchell (Francis); sister, Clara Robertson (Michael); aunts, Nathal Lee Tracy and Ruby Lee Miller; uncles, Sgt.
