James Spotford, Sr. was born on November 29, 1956, in Tampa, Florida, to the late Walter Spotford, Sr. and Bessie Murphy Spotford. He was educated in the public school system of Hillsborough County. James enlisted into the US Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1977. He worked for the University of South Florida for several years, until his health began to decline.

He was preceded in death by parents, Walter Spotford, Sr. and Bessie Murphy Spotford; siblings, Betty Jean Murphy, Sol Murphy, Corine Murphy, Eleanor Ross, and Eugene Murphy; niece, Delicia Polite; and nephew, Larry Murphy.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories; children, James Spotford, Jr., Jamal Akins, and Jametrice Goff; grandchildren, Dishun Griffin, and Mehki Worthington; sisters, Bessie Mae Murphy, Gloria Brandon, Amanda Murphy, and Blanche Spotford Ryan (Edward); brother, Walter Spotford III (Queen); aunt, Shirley Ann Jester (Albany, GA).; nephews, Harold Murphy, Philip Murphy, Joseph Murphy, Calvin Murphy, Jeffrey Morris, and Herman Morris; nieces, Janet Davis (Marvin), Janice Lafond, Felicia Lee, Donna Ashby (Derrick), Kathy Davis (Wilbur), Betty Jean Murphy, Debra Lewis, Amy Lewis, Carla Murphy, Naomi Morris, Angela Ross, and Erica Spotford Riley (Aaron); and a host of great-nieces and nephews.
