Josephine was born on June 21, 1937, in Moorehead, Mississippi, to parents, Walter Collins and Mattie Bruce. Josephine Williams attended schools in Moorhead MS. Josephine moved to Florida in the late 1960s. Josephine worked in the sewing industry at Martin Uniforms and Tropical Garments. Josephine also loved cooking and was employed by Morrison Cafeteria. Josephine loved playing bingo, word search puzzles, and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Collins and Mattie Bruce, and brothers, Percy Henderson and Pete Henderson.

Josephine is survived by her loving son, James Purnell (Carolyn); grandchildren, Russell Gaines and James Purnell, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jasmine Purnell, Alexis Gaines, James Purnell III, Channel Purnell, Xavier Purnell, AnaLeya Gaines, Alijah Marie Purnell, and Alani Gaines; nieces and nephews, Evelyn Henderson, Darrick Henderson (Tarra), Mary Henderson-Clegg(Clarence), Veronda Love (Terrance), Doloris Williams (John), sister-in-law, Dorothy Norton; special friends, Jacqueline Martin and Shirley Hordge; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
