A homegoing celebration for Mrs. Lena Mae Powell Barker of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 will be held Saturday, August 26th 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3005 E. Ellicott St., Rev. Larry Mouton, Jr., pastor, officiating. The interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida. Lena Mae Powell Barker was born June 11, 1945 in Tallahassee, Florida to the late Clarence Powell and the late Lessie Powell Conway. Lena was educated in the Leon County Public School System. She was a proud graduate of the original Lincoln High School, class of 1963. Following high school, she married Edward L. Barker and moved to Tampa, Florida. Lena accepted Christ at an early age and continued to live her life for Christ. She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher Board Ministry and the Pastor's Aide committee. Lena was a retired employee for Walter Industries, Inc., where she worked as a pension analyst for 38 years. She was an active member of the Woodland Terrace Golden Stars and a former member of the Urban League Guild and Red Hat Society. Lena leaves to cherish her memories, her beloved daughter Kimberly E. Thomas (Paris); a grandson, Kobe Newton; two sisters, Winifred C. Henderson and Patricia A. Falana (Andrew); a brother, Michael V. Powell (Sally); and a host of family and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, August 25th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
