Lorrie J. Underwood, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, in Tampa, Florida. He was born on Christmas Day in 1952, in Dothan, Alabama, Lorrie's life was a testament to the joy and warmth that he brought to the world. Lorrie was a beacon of creativity and humor, known for his intelligent wit and artistic talent. He was a beloved art teacher who inspired countless students throughout his career. His legacy in the world of art and education is indelible, marked by the lives he touched with his passion and enthusiasm for self-expression. After graduating from Dunedin High School, Lorrie furthered his education at Florida State University, where he honed his artistic skills and developed a profound love for teaching, his passion for art homed in on being
the art teacher at Largo Middle School, with 29 years of dedication. His approach to education was characterized by his belief in the transformative power of art, and he dedicated his life to fostering creativity in others. Lorrie's interests extended beyond the classroom; he was an avid beachgoer who found peace and inspiration in the rhythm of the waves. His love for driving led to many memorable road trips and adventures, often in pursuit of the perfect scenic spot to sketch or paint. Art was not just his profession; it was his way of connecting with the world around him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lorrie Underwood; his mother, Betty Smith Robinson; and his stepmother, Montest Underwood; aunt, Bobbie Jean Smith.
Lorrie's memory will be forever held in the hearts of his; children, Cherie Soto (Jose) and Christin Underwood; grandchildren, Sammy, Emily, Mya, and Lola Soto; great-grandchild, Sebastian Soto; brother, Jerry Underwood (Arnitrice); sisters, Lorrice Jones (Michael), Carolyn Fogg, and Lauretta Johnson (Andrew); uncle, Robert Smith; nephews, Hollis Davis III, D'Raey Fogg, , Cahlen Fogg, and Treyvontae Jones; nieces, Shaina West, Jerivona Underwood, Skylaar, and Kyndal Johnson; longtime partner and friend, Robin Devine and James Turner. Lorrie's extended family, including a host of cousins in Philadelphia and Detroit, will recall his infectious laugh and the way he could light up a room with his presence. His friends, colleagues, and former students will miss his mentorship, friendship, and the creative spark he ignited in those around him. Lorrie J. Underwood lived a life full of laughter, love, and artistry. Those who knew him would describe him as not just intelligent, funny, and creative, but as someone who made a lasting impact on their lives. His spirit will live in his artwork, the memories he created, and the legacy of kindness and inspiration he left behind. As we say goodbye to Lorrie, we are reminded of the beauty he saw in the world and the joy he found in sharing it with others. His was a life well-lived, full of passion and purpose. Lorrie J.
