Lottie
Pickens
December 21, 1927 – September 22, 2023
Lottie Jackson Pickens, affectionately, called "Mother Lottie" was born on December 21, 1927, to George and Daisy Jackson in Crisp County, Georgia. She was the first of three children. She moved to Tampa at the age of seventeen years old, after the passing of both of her parents. "Mother Lottie" had the good fortune to meet and marry Eddie Lee Pickens, also from Crisp County, Georgia. To this union four children were born: Fred (deceased), Gwendolyn, Rebecca, and Iona. She retired from Tampa General Hospital after working 10 years in the Housekeeping Department. Mother Lottie was active in the church, as well as the community.
She joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church (now St. John Cathedral) over sixty-five years ago. On different occasions, she served as president of the choir and the usher board, the nurse's gill, and most recently a member of the Mothers Board. Before her passing, she was one of the oldest living members who moved from the Governor Street location. She organized and was president for twenty years of the Good Samaritan Club and was an honorary member of the Eastern Star. Her love and compassion for helping people was exceptional. Mother Lottie peacefully entered eternal rest on the afternoon of September 22, 2023, after a long illness.
By the grace of God, she was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life. Mother Lottie was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Lee Pickens, sister, Betty Jackson Denson, son, Fred Pickens, and granddaughter, Freddie Mae Pickens. She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Gwendolyn Montgomery (Sidney) of Atlanta, GA, Rebecca Simmons (John), and Iona Simmons, both of Tampa; one brother, James Jackson (Thelma) of Miami, FL; one sister-in-law, Annie Mae Felder, Jonesboro, GA; one close first cousin, Estelle Johnson, New York, NY; four granddaughters, Debbie Pickens, Brenda Pickens, Kecia Graves all of Tampa Fl, Colette Montgomery, Atlanta, GA; four grandsons, Walter Pickens, James Pickens both of Tampa, FL, Frederick Pickens, Miami, FL, Edward Montgomery, Atlanta, GA.
