Obituary

Lucien Earl Sylvain Sr. was born July 29, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to the late August Sylvain Sr. and Olga Vera Davis. He was the fourth child in a family of seven siblings. He attended Chicago Public Schools, graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. with a Bachelors Degree in Economics, and later earned an Associate of Biblical Studies degree from the Bible Institute and Seminary in Atlanta, GA. Lucien has been a loving and devoted husband for 56 years. Two days after college graduation, on June 6, 1956, he married his college sweetheart, Patricia Robinson. After the wedding, Lucien and Pat left New Orleans for Chicago where they made their home. In 1957 Lucien was drafted into the army and spent two years at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. At his request Pat joined him there, and at the end of his tour of duty, the couple returned to Chicago to start their family To this loving union was born three children, Keith Robinson, Lucien Earl Jr. and Nicole Renee'. Lucien was also a loving and devoted dad. After Lucien returned home from the service it was easier to find a professional job than when he was 1A and eligible for the draft. He was hired by the Campbell Soup Company in sales and marketing. For the next 22 years he worked in sales and marketing, rising to the level of Regional Manager. Other companies in his work resume are Keebler, Clairol and Max Factor. As a result of job transfers the family has lived in Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois. Tired of the snow and ice, and bored with the empty nest, Lucien decided to move south nearer Pat's mom and two of the children. Since no transfer was in the works, Lucien retired from Max Factor and moved to Lithonia, GA in 1985. In Georgia his interest turned to non-profit corporations. He was hired as Marketing Director at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and was responsible for generating tons of food donations coming into the warehouse for distribution throughout the south. He stayed with the food bank for 9 years, and enjoyed the idea of helping others. In 1998 he was offered a job by the Montgomery Food Bank as Operations Manager. He was responsible for the complete operation and stayed for 5 years until he retired. While in Michigan, Lucien accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized on October 7, 1979 by Rev. Dr. Robert E. Bailey at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Pontiac, MI. After training and testing he was ordained as a deacon on October 8, 1981, and has not been without a church home since this time. In Atlanta he was a deacon at Greenforest Community Church, Dr. George O. McCalep Jr., pastor. In Montgomery, he was a deacon and in charge of the Trustee Board at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Rev. Michael Thurman, pastor. At Exciting Central Tampa Baptist Church he was again ordained by Dr. Jeffery L. Singletary on February 8, 2009. While at Central, Lucien was happy to serve wherever needed. Lucien's membership is now with Heritage Christian Community Baptist Church where he had the heart to serve but not the strength. For leisure Lucien loved reading historical books. He was waiting for "Lincoln," by Doris Kerns Goodman, but it did not arrive in time. His library is overflowing with good books. He also loved football but enjoyed watching basketball more because it's faster. He loved jazz, collecting caps, coins and clothes. He also loved roadtrips to anywhere, but was looking forward to going to New Orleans. Now, sadly he is. Lucien was preceded in death by his mother Olga Vera Davis Sylvain, father August E. Sylvain Sr., brother August E. Sylvain Jr. and brother, Eugene David Sylvain and nephew Eric Sylvain. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife Patricia; sons Keith ( Michelle) Sylvain of Durango, CO. and Lucien E. Sylvain Jr.; daughter Nicole (John) Sylvain-Turner, sisters: Olga Aaurru, Rosetta Cooper, and Fione (Maurice) Dukes, of Chicago IL ; brother Alvin (Zoe) Sylvain of Winchester, CA; sister -in-law Jacqueline Sylvain of Michigan; three grandchildren: Lucien III, Spencer and Chandler Sylvain of Jupiter, FL; aunt, Alice Duminie of Chicago; nieces: Bernadette Saunders, Karyn Cooper, Marla Fitzgerald, Lynette Sylvain, Dorian Sylvain, Gia Aaurru, Angela Sienkiewicz, Gina Sizemore, Jacqueline Delafuente all of the Chicago area; Fione Ellison of Los Vegas, and Angelina Sylvain of California, nephews: Leonard Cooper Jr., August Sylvain III and Anthony Sylvain. He also leaves to mourn a host of cousins, great nephews and nieces, special "cousins" Roslyn B. Scott, and James Brooks, and many other friends that he loved and enjoyed their company. Lucien was an overcomer, with a gentle, loving spirit. He loved people. He was our family patriarch and we will miss him dearly.
