Mary, affectionately called "Ms. Mary", was born on June 8, 1935, in Jersey City, NJ to Bennie and Dester Funches. Traveling was her favorite hobby and she enjoyed serving others at church. She was a deaconess at Revealing Truth Ministries, and participated in the Nursing Home Ministry and the Wise and Virtuous Women group.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Dester Funches; siblings, Nathaniel Borden, Robert Funches, and Emmanuel Borden; daughters, Sheila Marshall and Francine Marshall; and former spouse, Love Owens.

She leaves precious memories with her daughters, Pamela and Katrina Owens; grandchildren, David Fulse III, Tashenia Owens, Dietrich Marshall, Eugene Owens, Devon Owens, Eduardo Tenorio, Branden Owens, Torianna Austin, and Alexandria Austin; great-grandchildren, A-chai'a Jackson, E'nier Jackson, Perkari Williams, Kyla Fulse-Pettis, Laleena Pettis, and Verdell Pettis III; brother, Vance Chavis (Rosie); sisters-in-law, Rev. Theorphlis Borden and Georgianna Funches; nephews, Stephen, Jonathan, Nathan, and Bobby Borden; niece, Cheryl Borden Thomas; cousins, Robert, Michael, Saundra, and Kenny Freeman, Earlene and Nadine Washington; longtime family friends, Willie Hatte and Beverly Stewart; and a host of others relatives and friends.
