Obituary

Mattie was born on March 11, 1933, in Cuthbert, Georgia, to William Carter and Precious Lyles. She loved baking cakes, traveling, going to church, and spending time with her family. She was a faithful member of the Bethel AME Church for over 30 years. She was President of the Usher Board, Head Usher, and Coordinator of the youth usher board. She served on the Sunday school board and the Board of Trustee. She was in the Lay Organization and Womens Missionary Society during that time she was ordained by the bishop as the official Mother of Bethel. She donated appliances to the church kitchen and did all the baking for all the church functions. Last but not least she was the Mother of the church.

She worked at USF for 35 years as administrative personnel registering and making sure the students received their mail and dorm information. Sister Mattie Hill joined International Free and Accepted Modern Masons, Inc. and Order of the Eastern Star June 17, 1971; Sister Mattie Hill was a member in every degree in the Order. Sister Mattie Hill joined the Marshal Department May 07, 1983, where she served as the State of Florida Director for many years, and she served as the Marshal National Director for many years. She was a very dedicated and faithful member in our organization for 52 years. She started in Evening Light Chapter 2 group and ended with the Peace 375 group.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Hill; son, Andrew Holloway Jr.; and brother, William Carter Jr.

She leaves precious memories with her children, Christine Jackson, Ernestine Mention, Geraldine Powell, and Anthony Holloway (Andrea); grandchildren, Paul Humphrey Jr., Laurinda Ryan (Robert), Trenishia Humphrey, Tabitha Humphrey, Andrew Holloway III, Eric Holloway Sr. (Cybonee), Walter Mention Jr. (Cortney), and Amoyi Oyegunie; a host of great-grandchildren, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins; special friends, Hazel Matthews, Harvey Nichols, and Shirlene Andrews; and many other relatives and friends.
