Melvin Allen
Davis, Sr.
April 2, 1950 – December 21, 2024
Melvin Allen Davis, Sr., was born on April 2, 1950, in Tampa, Florida, to the late Joe Louis Davis, Sr., and Lillie Mae Allen. After a lengthy illness, he was called home to rest on December 21, 2024, at the age of 74. Melvin was educated in the Hillsborough County School System and graduated from Middleton High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a musical entertainer in the military band. During his service, he earned the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, the Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, and the National Defense Medal. After receiving an honorable discharge, Melvin returned to Tampa and joined the Tampa Police Department.
However, he eventually found his true calling as a driver of buses and motor coaches. His career took him to various companies, including Tampa Bus Line (Tampa Hartline Company), Greyline, PSTA, and Cardinal Health. Beyond his professional life, Melvin was deeply involved in his faith. As a gifted pianist and organist, he played for many churches throughout the Tampa Bay Area. He was formerly the Minister of Music at Queen Street COGIC in St. Petersburg, Florida, and at First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa. Later in life, he returned to Brown Memorial COGIC, where he continued to be active in worship until his health prevented him from attending services.
Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Sanders Davis; his father, Joe Louis Davis, Sr.; his mother, Lillie Mae Allen Williams; his brother, Joe Louis Davis, Jr.; and his sister, Voncile Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Debbie (Angel) Robles, Melvin (Kim) Davis, Jr., Micka (Chris) Davis, Sandra (Brandon) Daniel, Marion (Andre) Mitchell, Barry Davis, Barron Davis, and Kevin Hodge; his sisters, Mary Evelyn Johnson and Glenora (William) Godlock; his brother, David Bostick; his brother-in-law, Elder Willie Williams; his goddaughters, Danielle
White and Gabrielle Thurman; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends, including Eddie Thurman (like a brother) and Charity Baker (like a son). Melvin will be remembered for his deep love of family, his commitment to service, and his
enduring faith. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and he will be greatly missed.
