Homegoing services for Mr. Melvin Jerome (Aka Uncle Son) Norton, Sr. of Tampa who passed away, Friday, August 10, 2012, will be held on Saturday, August 18th, 11:00 a.m., at Greater New Friendship M.B. Church, 3325 E. Emma Street, Pastor Madison Murray, officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Sylvester and Edith Benjaman Norton, 3 brothers, Clarence, Sylvester "Bat" and Conrad Norton; 3 sisters, Olga, Claretha and Portia Norton, 4 grandchildren, Anesha Nicole and Carlos Reneto Cummings, Carla and Carlette Norton, 3 nephews, Conrad, Emmanuel Norton and Norman Maddox, niece, Cynthia Maddox Jones. Melvin was born August 3, 1934 in Tampa, FL. He graduated from Middleton High School and married soul mate of 59 years on November 18, 1953 upon their union 5 children were born. He worked various jobs to support his family but found his passion in culinary arts. He worked at W.T. Edwards and the Women's Hospital in Tampa, FL. Upon completing his certification in food service in 1975 from the University of Florida, he worked at the Hillsborough County Sheriff office in food service as the senior production chef. He worked 15 outstanding years of service. He retired in the summer of 1996 and returned back to work a year later with the Hillsborough County Sheriff Office as a correctional officer. He later retired after 6 years of service. Melvin leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Vivian Guzman Norton; 5 children, Melvin Jerome Norton, Jr., Vivian "Toni" Smith, Andrea Norton Cummings (Darryl), Henry Norton (Traci) and Carl Norton; special grandson, Jaquez Norton; grandchildren, Tumeka Norton, Nakaya Norton, Andre Norton (Cammi), Darryl Cummings, Jr., Loretta White (Chris), Evita Mitchell (Tarus), Teresa Bates (Donald), Shaquita Norton, Camille Norton, Vivian Norton, Kalvina Cummings, Carl Norton, Jr., Kevrick, Henry Norton, Akaya and Curtis Norton, Atiya Norton, Katrin (Toni), Marlon and Kenneth; great grandchildren, Andre, Jr., Kemo, Jeronte, Delvin, A.J., Howard, D'Andre, Andrea, Jermiah, Tarus, Jr., Heaven, Kharisma, Rekaye, Desean, Delais, Delon, Kimora, Curtis, Jr., and JaNayaha; great-great grandchild, Tonya; 2 sisters, Doris Bryant and Lavern Collins; 6 nieces, Jackie Mickens (Sam), Natalie Sieger, Debra Norton, Doria Moore, Linda Collins and Jenie Norton; 4 nephews, Clarence Stephens, Ricky Collins, Reginald Norton and Frances Norton; great nieces, Pamela Lyles, Karen Reeves, Tammy Sumes, Lynne Maddox, Brenda Jones (Joe), April Norton, Kristen Griffen (Victor) and Prudence Dortch (Randy); great nephews, Darrell Jones (Sharon), Kenneth Jones (Roberta), Bernard Sumes, Antwan, and Eric Atkins (Paula); 6 sisters-in-law, Rena Guzman, Shirley Black (Frank), Carolyn Sesler (Lloyd), Margaret Woodie and Marjorie McGee (Alfred) and Beatrice Guzman; 2 brothers-in-law, Costello Guzman (Harriet) and Herbert Guzman (Betty); cousins, Lloyd Sesler, Jr., Norvick Sesler, Bubba Putman, Beverly Lett Todd, Yvonne Anderson and other family members, neighbors and friends including, the Jenkins', Smith's, Issac's, Woodalls', Stephens', Buie and Lawerence families Richard Woodbury, Minnie Williams, Eric Howard, Gail Vann, Erica Oliver, Derrick Woodie, Bennie W. Baker, Lloyd 4, Brain Pittman and Ruthie Mae and other sorrowing relatives and friends. The viewing will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, August 17th, from 5-8 p.m. Family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the Church on Saturday for the service.
