Mother Maxine
Mobley Douglas
November 2, 1929 – January 15, 2024
Mother Maxine was born November 2, 1929, in Brooksville, Florida to the late Eugene and Farris Mae Mobley. She was their only child. Maxine spent her early childhood in Brooksville before moving to Tampa to complete her education at Middleton Adult for clerical training. She was married to the late Walter David Douglas, Sr. for sixty years, and to this union one child, Walter David Douglas, Jr. (deceased) was born. Maxines professional career included serving as Legal Secretary for Attorney Francisco Rodique for ten years before becoming the first black hired by the Board of County Commissioners as a clerk where she worked for twenty-five years.
Her membership and affiliations included member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church all of her life, first at Allen Temple AME Church. Brooksville and in 1952, moving to Tampa where she joined Allen Temple AME Church, where she served until her passing. A loyal and faithful member of her church, through the years, she served as the Young Adult Choir advisor, a member of the Gospel Choir, Trustee Board, Steward Board, was a charter member and chair of the Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) and held membership roles in various fundraising events. She was also a member of Amicee of Tampa, a friends group of Beta Sigma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, having served as president of the local chapter, and at the state, regional, and national levels. Maxine's hobbies included traveling, reading, and baking.
She leaves to cherish her memories, grandchildren: Jermaine (Donna) Douglas, Jahmal Douglas, Yvette Boatwright, Kenneth Myers, Wayne Douglas and Terrance Brooks; great-grandchildren: Geovonnia, Sharmaine, Daja, Jermaine, Jr., Nia, Kahni, Erion, Gariona, Justin, Nyla, Jireh, Gregory, Taylor, and Nicholas; sister-in-law, Kaye Mannings; God-sister, Shirley Parker; God-daughter Easter Curry; Godchildren: Howard and Rev. Maxine Davis, Shawn Singfield, Janice Carter Collier, Felicia Gilmore-Long; nephew, Jack (Bonnie) Schuler; special friends: Pearl Coffee, Virginia Bland, Louise Mills, Barbara Davis Mills and a host of other family and friends. Special thanks to Mrs. Emma Burley; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews, who she loved with all of her heart.
