Obituary

Erma Robertson was born on January 27, 1935, in Bartow, Florida. A woman of grace, determination, faith, and remarkable accomplishments, she lived a life dedicated to serving others, embracing new experiences, and making a lasting difference in the lives of those she encountered. In March 1957, Erma married the love of her life, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Charlie A. Robertson, Sr. of Raleigh, NC. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to love, devotion, and companionship. They were not only husband and wife but also best friends who shared a lifetime of cherished memories, adventures, and unwavering support for one another. Together they raised six children. Their loving union continued until Charlie's passing in 2012. Erma received her early education at Union Academy High School in Bartow, Florida, where she was honored as May Queen. She continued her educational journey at Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned her degree in nursing and became a Registered Nurse. Her passion for caring for others led to a distinguished career in nursing, during which she served as Director of Nursing at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI). Through her leadership, compassion, and dedication, she touched countless lives and inspired those who worked alongside her.

A woman of unwavering faith, Erma was a devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Tallahassee, FL, where she faithfully served on Stewardess Board #4 for 26 years. She was also actively involved with the N.Z. Graham Board and the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., Tallahassee Chapter. Her commitment to service extended beyond the church and into her community, where she generously volunteered her time and talents. Erma was an accomplished and enthusiastic golfer who enjoyed both the competition and the friendships the sport brought into her life. As a member of the Jake Gaither Women's Golf League, she earned numerous recognitions, including third place in the JG Golf Annual Club Championship on December 14, 2002; first place in the Jake Gaither Women's Golf League on December 18, 2004; first place in the 15th Annual Greater Gaither Golf Game Gathering on April 9, 2005; and second place in the 2006 Rally for a Cure Golf Tournament. Her love for golf reflected her competitive spirit, perseverance, and zest for life.

Beyond her professional and community accomplishments, Erma found great joy in painting, crocheting, volunteering, and traveling. As a devoted military wife, she proudly accompanied her husband, Charlie, throughout his distinguished service in the United States Air Force. Their journey took them around the world, including Japan and Turkey, where they lived with their family and embraced new cultures, traditions, and experiences. Together, Erma and Charlie shared a passion for travel and adventure, making it a personal goal on their bucket list to visit all 50 states. With determination and excitement, they fulfilled that dream together, creating a lifetime of treasured memories along the way. Their travels were more than journeys to new destinations; they were a celebration of their love, friendship, and shared appreciation for life's many blessings. Throughout her life, Erma approached every challenge with gratitude, resilience, and practical wisdom, beautifully reflected in her memorable words: "Doing the best I can with what I have to work with." This simple yet powerful philosophy embodied her strength, resourcefulness, and determination to make the most of every opportunity. Erma Robertson's life was a remarkable journey of faith, love, service, and adventure. Her legacy of compassion, perseverance, and devotion to family and community will forever remain an inspiration to all who were blessed to know and love her.

Erma was preceded in death by her loving husband Air Force Lt. Col. Charlie A. Robertson, Sr.; father, Ralph Silas; mother, Amanda Hicks; brother, John Powell.

From her compassionate work in nursing to her devotion to family, church, community, and the game of golf, she demonstrated that a meaningful life is measured not only by accomplishments but by the love shared and the lives touched. Her wisdom, strength, and beautiful spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
