Nathaniel Allen,
Jr.
December 12, 1937 – January 6, 2026
Mr. Nathaniel Allen Jr. was the oldest of four boys, born December 12, 1937, to the late Nathaniel Allen, Sr. and Fannie Mae Allen in Warrington, Georgia. The family moved to Lakeland, Florida when he was three years old. Nathaniel had a humble beginning, the family having lived for a few years at Lake Ridge Homes, a segregated housing development in Lakeland. As Nate grew up, he developed skills in baseball, basketball and football at Rochell High. In football Nate was a wide receiver, a shooting forward in basketball and second baseman in baseball. Nate loved all three sports and was first in all three, but his favorite was basketball. Nate was a shooting forward who loved to shoot from the 3-point corner, before the 3-point corner was invented. As a result of his athleticism Nate was popular in High School. He had many friends and kept up with his classmates over the years. His primary hobbies were checkers, football, baseball, basketball, tennis and bowling. When Nate set the special in checkers you knew the game was all over. In Tennis, Nate and Emma won second place in a Mixed Doubles Tampa Senior City Tennis Championship in the late 1980's.
After graduating from HS in 1955, Nate went on to live with his late Uncle Calvin and Aunt Lena Hollimon in Cincinnati. And a few years later he joined the Army. While stationed at Ft. Braggs in North Carolina he met the love of his life, Emma. Nate was a medic in the Army and went on to continue his education in the Army in the medical field and obtained his Physician Assistant (PA) degree from Baylor University in St. Antonio, Texas. Nate achieved the level of Warrant Officer while in the medic. After his discharge from the Army, Nate worked as a PA at the VA hospital in Tampa for 17 years and at independent Urgent Care offices in Polk County, mostly in Winter Haven and Lakeland for over forty years before retirement. Nate was a good-hearted, generous and kind person. He looked out for his younger brothers and loved his family. Over the years, Nate and Emma enjoyed having family gatherings at their home in Tampa. Many of our parents' birthdays were celebrated at Nate's and Emma's home. He cared for his dad and his mom late in their lives, stopping by their home in Lakeland after work to check on them in their golden years. Nathaniel was intelligent, likable, creative and analytical. During his illness, and it was comforting to hear him say "It's all in God's hands."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Allen, Sr. and Fannie May Allen; uncles, Calvin Hollimon, Albert Hollimon, Will Hollimon; aunt, Rosie McCoy and brother, Leon Allen (Grace).
