Nelson Virella
Fonseca
September 24, 1957 – May 2, 2025
Mr. Nelson Virella "Nelly" was born on September 24, 1957, in New York City, NY to Andres Virella and Isabel Fonseca. A retired chef and car salesman, he was a man of many talents and an even bigger heart. He grilled 365 days a year, no matter the weather, always finding joy in feeding others. A devoted husband to his beloved Wilda, he adored his family and extended that love to everyone who walked through his door. Known as a built-in therapist, a friend, and a father figure to many, he gave freely of his time, advice, and laughter. He took pride in a fresh haircut and a clean car, and he never missed an episode on the ID channel.
His sweet tooth was legendary, and so was his bond with Cali the Cat, his ever-watchful companion. Scrappy and Nelson were best friends even with one eye Scrappy still had Nelson's back. Generous and grounded, he led with love, lived with purpose, and left a lasting mark on every life he touched. Nelson was a kind, generous, strong, and funny man, full of love. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Everyone who met Nelson walked away with a smile—his presence had that effect. He always put others first, making sure everyone around him was happy, even before thinking of himself. Nelson always had a plan, and whether you agreed with it, he had a way of talking you into it. A natural-born salesman with a gift for persuasion, he was also a self- taught chef who brought joy to many through his cooking. Nelson will be truly missed by his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his strength, courage, and kind heart. His legacy lives on in the smiles he gave and the love he shared.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Andy Virella. He leaves cherished memories to his wife, Wilda Vializ; children, Sean and Janeisha Virella, and Julio Ostolaza; grandchildren, JJ and Mia Ostolaza; parents, Andres Virella and Isabel Fonseca; sisters, Eva and Carmita Virella; friends, Bubba Leroy Hunter, Yayaira Melo, Lauren Sevilla, Max Aponte, Greg "The kid", Willy, Neno, and Leo.
