Oscar Lee
Douglas, Sr.
December 16, 1936 – August 14, 2025
Oscar Lee Douglas, Sr., was the second child born to Samuel and Florice Douglas (Turner) in Junction City, Kansas, on December 16, 1936. Even though he was raised in an orphanage from the tender age of 6 until 18, he never used his challenging beginnings as an excuse not to excel. "Doug", as he was affectionately called, joined the military at 18 years old after graduating from Manhattan Senior High School in Manhattan, Kansas.
He enjoyed an illustrious 22-year career of active service in the Air Force, Army and Army Reserve, moving up the ranks from Helicopter and Jet Mechanic and eventually reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. Doug married, Doris Jean Verse on September 1, 1959, and to that union, Sharon Yvette and (Oscar) Lee were born. On June 21, 1975, Doug married Yvonne Marie Gadson, and they welcomed two children, Kenya Juanita and Jerrod.
Doug accepted the Lord when he was in his forties at Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, under the pastoral leadership of the late, Rev. Fred Autry. His baptism was witnessed by Yvonne, and their four children and from that moment, he never missed an opportunity to share his faith and ensure those around him were saved. Doug was ordained as a Deacon at Greater Faith M.B.C. on April 26, 1987. He faithfully served at New Mount Zion M.B.C., under the late Rev. Dr. Walter J. Williams and Rev. Larry L. Roundtree II in Tampa, until his health failed him.
In 1992, Doug and Yvonne relocated from Los Angeles to Tallahassee, where he worked as a delivery driver for Napa Auto Parts, AutoZone, C&M Core Distributers, and then as a groundskeeper for Mabry Village. Doug had the opportunity to travel the world and enjoy God's creation. Some of his military and civilian travels included: Germany, Japan, Austria, Jamaica, and The Bahamas.
He and Yvonne ensured their children were well-traveled. In the late 90's, the Douglas family moved to Tampa, which would become their final stop. Doug shared fond memories of wilderness adventures with Kenya and her Brownie Scout Troop to beautiful mountainous areas in Los Angeles County and he reveled in his role as security, ensuring their safety and well-being on every trip.
Doug was a doting father and grandfather, and he was present at all camping trips, dance recitals, awards assemblies, football, baseball, and softball games, and other extracurricular activities. Doug's infectious laugh and his countless stories will be greatly missed, but his memory and legacy of love will live forever.
He is reunited in heaven with his loving and dutiful wife of almost 50 years, Yvonne; his parents, Samuel and Florice Douglas; his brothers, Samuel, Wendall, and (Herschel) Benny; as well as his sisters, Beulah Williams and Donaretha Turner; and son-in-law, Carl Judie.
Left to cherish his memories are: his children, Sharon Y. Judie (Perris, CA); Dr. O. Lee Douglas, Jr. (Long Beach, CA); Dr. Kenya J. Jones [Tim] (Ruskin, FL), and Jerrod Gadson Douglas (Tampa, FL), grandchildren, Dorisha Smith (Los Angeles, CA), Kyle Loud (Long Beach, CA), Christian Douglas [Brandi] (Long Beach, CA), Robert Douglas (Long Beach, CA), Brandon Douglas [Jasmine] (Long Beach, CA), Timothy B. Jones II (Ruskin, FL), and Zoie Jones (Ruskin, FL) and four great-grandchildren, Davion Smith (Perris, CA), Dana Burke (Perris, CA), Paris Douglas (Long Beach, CA), and London Douglas (Long Beach, CA), and a host of nieces, nephews and in-laws. All of whom will greatly miss him.
