Patricia C. Malphus, affectionately known as "Pat," was born in Tampa, Florida, on November 7, 1944, to her parents, James and Julia McVely, who preceded her in death. On January 4, 2026, Pat transitioned from this life surrounded by the warmth of her family's love. Pat attended Blake High School, where she met the love of her life, Wilbert Malphus, Sr.
After earning her high school diploma, she enrolled at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida, where she earned her degree in nursing. Pat was employed at the University Community Hospital, which later became Florida Hospital and is now known as Advent Health. She served 42 years there and retired as a Registered Nurse. Even after retirement, her commitment to assisting and caring for others continued. "Pat" had a strong passion for reading and joined the Lunch Time Readers Book Club. She was also an original member of Cuddle Up and Read Every Day (CURED, Inc.), focusing on fostering daily reading habits in young children to improve literacy and school readiness. She also volunteered at Broward Elementary School, providing tutoring, mentoring, and support to students. Her favorite hobbies included gardening and traveling with her family and classmates.
Pat accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was a committed member of Allen Temple AME Church, where she actively participated in the Women's Missionary Society and served as treasurer. Pat found joy in attending church and noon-day Bible study, as well as participating in Bible Study Fellowship at the Idlewild Baptist Church. In the face of opposition and challenges, she would always advise you to say, "God Bless You, and God Bless Them."
"Pat" was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend leaving behind a legacy of love carried on by her devoted husband of 65 years, Wilbert Malphus, Sr., daughter, LaVonne Nelson (Twain), and son, Wilbert Malphus, Jr.; a dedicated and compassionate sister, Theresa "Peaches" Clark; brother, Herbert Jones, and brother-in-law, Milton Malphus. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Dontavius Malphus, Wilshara Malphus, Wilbert Malphus III, Trenton Malphus, Demarcus Johnson, Marlon Dorsey, Jahaad Malphus, Darrell Marchman, Breanna Hazel, Saniya Malphus, Jailyn Malphus, Amajh Malphus, Wil'nhila and Wil'nhilia Malphus; seven great-grandchildren, Assir Felder, Milanni Jones, Madilynn Jones, Demarcus, Johnson Jr., Wilbert Malphus IV, Chosen Austin, and Chance Austin.
Pat is further survived by nieces, Rita (Kenneth) Parson, Hope Brown, Rochelle Brown, Valerie Clark, Patrice Weatherspoon, Sabrina Deloach, Bridgette Blackmon, Cheryl Clark, Vicki Malphus, Normeatha (Barney) Corbett, Domica Jones and Cariana (Jerrell) James; nephews, Vesco Bradley, Kent Brown, Stephan Booker (Deborah), Bernard (Tammy) Clark Jr., Lawrence Malphus, Jr., Herbert Jones, Jr., Ali Malphus; and a host of loving cousins and friends.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Kathryn Mitchell and Clara Brasfield, close and dedicated friends whose love, support, and presence brought comfort during this time. A. special appreciation is also extended to LaToya Washington and the staff at Advent Health (Taneja fifth floor) for their compassion, support, and exceptional care. Pat will always be cherished for her warm smile, soothing presence, and ability to make others feel acknowledged and appreciated, whether through a smile, laughter, thoughtful advice, or a simple moment of togetherness. She created memories that will be treasured forever, and while her absence will be profoundly felt, she was loved so deeply that she will never be forgotten.
