Obituary

Brother Roland H. Johnson

A homegoing celebration for Brother Roland H. Johnson of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016 will be held Friday, October 14th, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N. 29th Street, Rev. Dr. S. Evan Burrows, pastor, officiating with Rev. Christopher Jarnegan, eulogist. The interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Brother Roland H. Johnson was born August 4, 1931 to the late Oscar Johnson, Sr. and Frances Johnson. Mr. Johnson accepted Christ at a young age and joined First Baptist Church of College Hill where he attended faithfully throughout his lifetime with his family. Mr. Johnson was affectionately call R. H., Bull and Paw-Paw! He was a member of Choir number 3 and in later years the Senior Adult Choir and Male Chorus respectively and enjoyed every minute of singing praises of God. He received his education from the Hillsborough County School System where he attended Lomax Elementary, Booker T. Washington and graduated from Middleton Senior High School. He also spent a year at Florida A&M University before serving in the U.S. Army for two years, where he was honorably discharged. His career achievements included successfully working 40 plus years at Winn Dixie as warehouse Manager. He enjoyed watching football on Sunday afternoons and looked forward to spending precious time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie L. Johnson; parents, Oscar Johnson, Sr. and Frances Johnson; sister, Helen Jackson, June Johnson and Frances Johnson; nephews, Rev. Roland Oliver, Sr., Aaron Rawls, Archie Gary, Timothy Gary and Edner Gary and niece, Mildred Gary Bush. He leaves loving memories with his surviving sibling, Rev. Oscar Johnson, Jr.; god-daughter, Tanya Gordon (Chris); god-children, Angelia Thompson and Brian Marcus of Atlanta, GA, Alexis Evans and Taniyah Thompson; a host of devoted nephews, which include Aaron Jackson (Beverly), Oscar Johnson III (Gay), Nathan Johnson, Brian Johnson, Daniel Troy (Doris), Crosby Gary (Yvette), Melvin Gary (Tommie), Larry Gary, Randolph Gary (Ming), Jerry Gary, Harvey Doleman, Johnathan Oliver and Roland Oliver, Jr.; a caring god-son, Rodney (Michael) Lasing; a host of devoted nieces, Nadine P. Johnson, Para Lee London, Agnes Robinson (Jerry), Sandra Gary, Judy Alexander (Leon), Cheryl Turk (Joe), Melissa Brantley (Carl) and Connie Gary; longtime friends for over 60 years Alma Purify, Eartha Miller and Alberta Reed; loyal friend, Adrian Brockman and a host of other relatives and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Thursday, October 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Friday for the service.
