Celebrating the life of Ruth Thelma Harvey Brown of Tampa, Florida who passed away, Saturday, September 27, 2014, will be held Saturday, October 4, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at Bible-Based Fellowship Church of Temple Terrace, 8718 N. 46th Street, Tampa, FL 33617, Rev. Dr. Earl Mason, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Ruth Thelma Harvey Brown, affectionately known as "Sister" was the eldest daughter of the late Perry C. and Mable T. Harvey, Sr. She was born and nurtured in Tampa, Florida. As a child she accepted Christ and was baptized at First Baptist Church of West Tampa, where she was a member for many years. Continuing her spiritual devotion she affiliated with New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. T.W. Jenkins, pastor. She attended the public schools of Hillsborough County and was a graduate of Middleton Sr. High School, class of 1949, where she was member of the mighty Middleton Tigers girls' basketball team. She continued a family tradition and traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Spelman College. At Spelman she was a member of the Morehouse College cheering squad and the Granddaughters club. Ruth graduated in 1953 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Spanish. Her love and support for the college has never faltered. Cherishing her life and beautiful memories are: her loving and only child, daughter Darele Brown Campbell (Ray); two grandchildren, Lauren Darele and Gregory H. Fleming II; two sisters, Gustava Harvey and Dorothy Evelyn Keel (Jimmie), all of Tampa, FL; several nieces and nephews, Sonja Harvey McCoy, Kermit Harvey, Gail Simmons, Maurice Harvey, J. Oscar Simmons III, New York, NY, Denise Keel Scott (Kacey), Jacksonville, FL, Jerry N. Harvey, Gustavo Keel (Trish), Daytona Beach, FL, Perry C. Harvey III, Sean N. Keel (Shamika), Angela Hanna, Francis Hanna, Jr., Cynthia Johnson, Eleanor Harden, Shon Ford (Jerome), Reginald Hanna and George Brown, Jr., Silver Springs, MD; and a host of other close and wonderful family members including, Florence Reeves, Seattle, WA; and friends including, Ann Walton, Thomasville, GA, Spelman sisters, Jean Foster Scott and Lejune Alderidge; lastly the four women who took great care of her during her illness, Lillian Hobbs, Margaret O'Neil, Kim White and Sheri Driscol. The visitation will be held at Bible-Based Fellowship Church of Temple Terrace from 5 to 8 p.m. The Alpha Kappa Alpha, Ivy beyond the Wall ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. The family will receive friends during the wake hour from 7 to 8 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
