She was raised in Calhoun County, Georgia, where she attended the local public schools. From an early age, Savannah was surrounded by family, faith, and strong values that would guide her throughout her remarkable life. At an early age, Savannah gave her life to Christ and developed a deep and abiding faith. She was a devoted member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church in Edison, Georgia, where her faith became an important foundation of her life. In the 1950s, Savannah relocated to Tampa, Florida, where she began a new chapter of her life. It was during this time that she married Willie J. Johns.

Savannah built a life characterized by hard work, perseverance, faith, and love for family. Savannah was a dedicated and hardworking woman. She was employed with Edward's Pipe and Tobacco Factory, where she faithfully worked for 25 years before retiring.
