Selma was born on February 18, 1935, in Boston, Massachusetts. She worked for University Community Hospital as a dietician supervisor. She was married to Clinton Murphy, and they were blessed with three children Dewayne, Gail, and Linda Murphy. Selma and her family attended church services at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.

She leaves behind to cherish her precious memories; her husband Clinton Murphy; grandchildren, Reshawd Murphy, Kervin Williams, Labron White, Krista Williams, and Larrise Miles; great-grandchildren, Jarel Williams, Julian Murphy, A`niya Jones, Jaylee Williams, Ca`mya Myles, Keyaira White, Layla Miles, and King Scayle; loving nieces and nephews, Amanda Brown, Sabrina Kincade, Jasmine Hughes, Zhanna Williams, Teyanna Hughes, Raven Williams, Steven Kincade, Rupert (Nelson) Hughes and Jean Casteel; and her dearest friend, Edna Jenning.
