Obituary

Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Shirley Shaw McLendon of Tampa who transitioned peacefully though unexpected on Saturday, August 31, 2013, surrounded by her loving and devoted husband and family, will be held on Friday, September 6th, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N. 29th Street, Rev. Dr. Evan Burrows, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Shirley Shaw McLendon was born in Aucilla, Florida to the late Roby Terrell and Etha Mae Zanders Terrell. Shirley was a graduate of Florida A&M University, College of Nursing. She worked many years for the Hillsborough County Health Department; she retired in 2003 as the Ass. Director of Nursing Administration. She was a member of First Baptist Church of College Hill. She was also a member and participated in the Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouette and the Red Hatters. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats and pearls in her honor. Shirley McLendon was married to Mr. Rupert McLendon, Jr. on September 10, 1958. She leaves to cherish her loving memories with her husband of 55 wonderful years, Rupert McLendon, Jr.; 2 sons, Renay McLendon (Ronnie) and Rupert McLendon III; 1 daughter, Sheryll McLendon Pleas and son-in-law, Bill Pleas of Georgia; sister, JoAnn Graham (James) of Texas; 8 grandchildren, Xavier McGahee ReneAC., SadAC., Mya, Raymond, Yelynda, Rheah and Jehonathon McLendon; 4 nieces, Rhonda Shaw-Jefferson, Althea Terrell, Dorothy Terrell and Yolanda Graham; 5 nephews, LeVonne Terrell, Kevin Terrell, Sean Shaw, Ransom Gadson (Resha) and Wade Graham; 4 sisters-in-law, Mamie Shaw, Priscilla Williamson, Mable Carr and Evelyn McLendon; brother-in-law, Dennis McLendon (Freddie); god daughter, Pat Knowles- Green; best friends, Doris Bryant, Virgie Fitzpatrick, Luella Carrington, Annie Pearl Miller and Alveta Maultsby; and other relatives, friends and church family. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Thursday, September 5th, from 4 to 7 p.m. The family will receive guest from 5 to 6 p.m. The friends are asked to meet at the church on Friday for the service.
