Valarie was born on February 7, 1958, to Columbus and Willie Mae Thornton. She was educated in the school systems of Hillsborough County, and a graduate of Hillsborough Community College. She enjoyed an extended career at Bank of America as a seasoned supporter of the Tampa Bay Bucs, Devil Rays, and the New York Yankees. She departed this life on the same day that the sun set on her only child, Marcus (April 23, 1999).

She was preceded in death by her son, Marcus Tavares Wilson; her parents, Columbus and Willie Mae Thornton; uncles, Nathaniel Thornton, Alfonso Thornton, Sr., and Kenneth J. Thornton, Sr.; sisters, Arletha Thornton, and Delores Thornton Demerson.

Valarie leaves to cherish fond memories with her devoted sisters, Ollie Lee Thornton and Maxine Williams Hearns (James); brothers, James Thornton and Edward Thornton; nieces, Keandra Thornton, Debrynna Garrett, Brenda Allen, Candis Thornton, LeC Garrett, and Tangela Rogers; nephews, Rev. Ronald Demerson, and wife of San Antonio, TX, and Frederick Demerson of Oklahoma City, OK, Alfonso Thornton, Jr. (Esther), Clarence Allen (Julie), Keldric LaJuan Garrett (Natalie Cole), Phillip Garrett (Stephanie), Jarvis Thornton, Desmond Thornton, Andre Tyrone Williams, Gregory Thornton, Charles Edward Thornton, Mathew Christopher Thornton, Kenneth J. Thornton, Jr., Tyrone Thornton, Calvin Williams (Lolita), Darryl Williams, and Donnie Daniels. The Lord blessed Valarie with many loving friends and relatives; too many to list, but all are loved.
