A Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Walter Mitchell Knox of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017 will be held on Saturday, May 20th, 11:00 a.m. at Keeney Chapel United Methodist Church, 7736 Destin Drive, Tampa, FL 33619, Rev. Ronald Hubbard pastor, officiating. The interment will be in Florida National Cemetery. Walter Mitchell Knox, also known as 'Professor Knox', 'Snookie', and 'Poppy' was born August 5,1929,in Augusta, Georgia to Jessie Thomas Knox and Gladys Roselle Knox. After his father's death in 1942, the family moved to New York, where he attended public school and graduated from Morris High School. He received his Bachelor's degree from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Walter received his Master's degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He joined the Army as paratrooper, deployed from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.His professional career included Professorship and Dean of Students at Delaware State College and Saginaw State College in Saginaw, Michigan, as a CAAA, Psychologist, and he provided direction to Juvenile Detention Home clients in Cleveland, Ohio. His spiritual development began at an early age. From childhood and accompanied by his aunt Norma on piano, Walter and his brother Bobby sang and gave many speeches at Trinity Methodist Church on Washington Avenue, New York. In 2005, he moved to Tampa and joined Keeney Chapel United Methodist Church, where he delighted fellow members with Shakespeare recitations and words of wisdom. He was preceded in death by his siblings; Jessie Thomas Knox 'JT', Annie Gertrude Knox, William Harold 'Billie' Knox, Mary Francis Knox and Robert 'Bobby' Wilson Knox. Walter Mitchell Knox leaves to cherish his memories with his: beloved, Annie Blatch and her children, Clayton Washington, Jr. (Darlene), Thomas Edmond, Jr. and Stephanie Hopps (Mathew); daughter, Ersula Knox Odom; son, Walter Mitchell Knox, Jr., granddaughters, Ursula Rose Odom and Danielle Odom; special niece: Maya Cox; sister-in-law, Annette Cox; special relatives, the Andrews family: Maurice Andrews, Eddie Andrews, Debora Andrews Rowell, Columbus Andrews, Joseph Smith, Jr. and the Duggins family; and a host of loving family and friends. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, May 20th from 5 to 8 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
