He was educated in the public schools of Hillsborough County, graduating from Howard W. Blake High School in 1962. While in high school, he was a member of the All Star Wilds basketball and football legacy that went through Blake. After graduating with a football scholarship, he enrolled in Fort Valley State University, where he not only played football but also excelled in tennis. After college, Wilbert became involved with Hillsborough and Sarasota County Parks and Recreation Departments. Because of his inner desire to always work with children, he sought employment with the Boys and Girls Club, where he served as a director and coached the football and basketball teams. He shared his loved for quietness by taking the children on fishing trips. He later worked in Thomson, Georgia, this time coaching high school football. His friends and family knew of his unique sense of humor, and his gift for deep conversations was displayed when he managed the Blue Shark. His warmth and giving spirit will be missed.
