Obituary

Mrs. Wilhelmina D. Booker was born July 13, 1930 in Union, South Carolina. She was the first born of four children to the late Inez and John Dawkins. Mrs. Booker departed this life on December 28, 2013 in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. After graduating from Pershing High School in Detroit, Michigan, Wilhelmenia relocated to New York to begin her nursing career. She later was employed at the Veteran's Administrative Hospital, Dearborn, Michigan for a number of years. On February 15, 1958 Wilhelmenia married Almanus Booker, Sr.; they resided in Jersey City, New Jersey. To this union two children were born Dester Booker and Almanus Booker, Jr. While in New Jersey she furthered her nursing education and was employed with St. Francis Hospital. In June of 1973 the Booker family relocated to Tampa, Florida. Mrs. Booker worked at University Community Hospital and retired from there after 20 plus years of service. She was then employed as a supervisor at Delta Nursing Facility until her health began to fail. In late 1973, the Booker family joined New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Tampa, Florida. Mrs. Booker was a dedicated member until her health began to decline. She was a member of the nurses' guild, vice president of the Pastor's Aide Board, attended computer classes regularly and was a faithful member of the Golden GEMS. Mrs. Booker loved to travel abroad to Costa Rica, Paris, South America and Germany to just to name a few. She also loved and enjoyed eating good food; she and her co-workers at University Community Hospital published a cookbook with their favorite recipes. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Curtis Dawkins. She leaves to cherish loving and fond memories with her daughter, Dester Booker and son, Almanus Booker, Jr.; grandson, Thomas Curtis Booker; sisters, Dorothy Russell, Mary Ella Wilkins (Leonard) both of Detroit, MI; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and her church family.
